Carlos Mare aka Mare 139 is an American graffiti artist, painter, and sculptor, best known for his works in subway graffiti and metal sculptures. Born in 1965, Mare grew up in East Harlem (previously called Spanish Harlem) in Upper Manhattan, New York. Like many of his contemporaries, Carlos was also a part of a group who created subway graffiti in the 70s and 80s, when this trend reached its peak. This was also a period of his career when he produced some of the most famous pieces under a pseudonym Mare (short for Nightmare). Mare’s passion for contemporary art enabled him to change and perfect his own writing style.vocabulary. His metal sculptures are inspired by his interests of form, light, space in an architectural environment. His admiration of early avant-garde art and sculpture inspired the merging of aesthetics between ‘graffiti’ styles and the modernists of the early 20th century.
